Symptoms After power has been turned off, files are corrupted, SPEL for Windows cannot open a project, etc.
Causes Power should never be removed before shutting down Windows NT. NT uses write back caching so many files are in memory but not written to disk. If power is removed without shutting down properly, there is a chance that files will be corrupted.
Remedies
- It is recommended that a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) be used to prevent power from being removed suddenly when black outs or brown outs occur.
- Operators should be informed of the correct shut down procedure.
- If Windows NT appears to be hung, use Ctrl-Alt-Delete to open the task manager. You can then shutdown or attempt to kill the applications that are hung instead of turning off the PC.
- If the mouse is not working, use the keyboard. The mouse may work again after killing the offending task.
